Oral Histories

According to the Oral History Association of Australia "oral history is the recording of memories of people's unique life experiences".

Oral history is a method of historical documentation that records the spoken words of people who have knowledge or experience of past events.

Oral history is often recorded on tape, then transcribed. Quality content depends on planning a key number of relevant questions that allow for the exploration of a topic, as well as for the provision of facts.

Quality editing of an oral history transcript ensures that the written material focuses on the topic, retains the voice of the speaker but does not lose momentum because of spoken interjections.

Escribo Writing and Research services acknowledges The Oral History Association's Guidelines of Ethical Practice which are a good basis on which to undertake an oral history project.
